Welcome to HGP Power

It all begins with an idea.

Welcome to HGP Power.

The company has come from the lessons I took from my time in the resources sector of Western Australia. After a number of years in both mining and LNG production, I came to recognise the coming changes to energy worldwide. With HGP Power, I aim to allow steady simple expansion of power storage in a way that can be largely done with local equipment and using a resource that WA has in surplus, abandoned mine sites.

The Energy needs of the future will depend on storage to an extent I feel few have acknowledged. Energy export need 24/7 capacity. So both Importers and Exporters can rely on production to continue at the highest rates possible. Pumped Hydro is currently the lowest cost power storage option by far and can be part of our future energy mix to ensure cheap and available power to Australian Retail and Industry consumers.

HGP- The Story of a name

I’ve had people ask me what the letters HGP Stand for? Is the P and H a sneaky way to include my initials? As funny as that would be, the answer is no. The letters are part of a simple equation.

It’s simply the equation for head pressure. It is this pressure that generates the force behind the flowing water that we utilise to generate power. When we want to pump the water back uphill,

Pressure=H x P x G

  • H - Head

  • P - Density

  • G - Gravity

Head is the height from the top reservour to the bottom one. P is the term for density, often described with the greek letter Rho. G is gravity, 9.81 m/s2 here on earth, where we plan to operate in the forseeable future.

To convert this to power, simply multiple by the flow rate. For us, the rate can be positive or negative, depending on how we operate.
